Native forestry’s importance to Tasmania’s economy highlighted in new report

DATE 30/06/2008

Forestry Tasmania welcomed the release of a report today by the Cooperative Research Centre for Forestry that highlights the importance of the forest industry to Tasmania’s economy, employment and regional areas.

“The report shows the importance of the Forest Industry to Tasmania’s economy providing accurate but conservative direct employment data.” Said Forestry Tasmania’s Executive General Manager, Hans Drielsma.

“By applying the accepted multipliers for indirect employment, total employment dependent on the forest sector would be about double that quoted.”

“The report emphasises the importance of native forestry in particular, which makes up 63% of the forest industry’s jobs, to our State’s employment figures.”

“This data also highlights the very important contribution the industry is making to local economies in smaller communities across the state.”

“Areas such as Dorset, Kentish and the Derwent Valley in particular, rely heavily on forest employment to support their communities.”
